BASK General Meeting for February 2004
February 25, 2004
By: Dean McCully

Check This Out: Do you see her? The Mermaid in the Bay? Well, that's just one of the MANY things we learned in the February 2004 BASK meeting: Devorah from Save the Bay (www.savesfbay.org ) teaches us how to spot the "Mermaid in the Bay". We also learned all about birdwatching from Mike at Local Birds (www.localbirds.com ), we were treated to an amazing t-shirt auction by Barbara K, and a phenomenal (as always) first aid talk by the world famous Bobbie Foster (www.fostercalm.com ). I don't know about most BASKers, but my brain was full by the time I left. Oh, and we also nominated officers. You'll have to see the BASK Website for nominations 'cause I ain't talkin. I'll only say that Andrea was nominated "BASK Wine Maven" and Deirdre was nominated for "BASK Chocolate Maven". Both honorary titles, but both sure to hold more power with BASK than even the president!

A question from the audience.

DSC00119.JPG
Mike lectures patiently.

DSC00120.JPG
The crowd is captivated.

DSC00121.JPG
Everybody studies the bird charts.

DSC00122.JPG
Back to Bird School. Mike from Local Birds educated us BASKers on local birds. He handed out his famous folded ID guides and we spent the night identifying birds. PLUS a bunch more stuff at this, the February 2004 BASK General Meeting.

DSC00127.JPG
These things are COOL. And Mike GENEROUSLY gave them away for FREE!

DSC00140.JPG
Mike receives much applause as he leaves.

DSC00146.JPG
Barbara did a VERY cool thing: she auctioned her collection of 2003 event t-shirts. She raised Way to go, Barbara!

Bobbie Foster gives her world famous Kayaking First Aid talk.

DSC00157.JPG
She's an expert, that's for sure!

DSC00160.JPG
ALWAYS take a first aid kit!

DSC00165.JPG
Bobbie Foster, world famous first aid instructor ( www.fostercalm.com/ ) does a full-blown lecture on first aid for kayakers. She reminded us of the obvious need to take first aid kits, something that many of us sometimes forget.

DSC00173.JPG
Bobbie has the PERFECT teaching persona. That's why she has taught in so many far flung locations (and has probably indirectly saved more than a couple of lives with her imparted first aid wisdom!)

DSC00175.JPG
Bobbie and Jesse field questions. Bobbie is doing a weekend first aid class at the Point Reyes Life Boat House soon. Check for details.

Upcoming events. Board 3 of 3.

DSC00185.JPG
Barbara K auctions her collection of 2003 t-shirts. What an AWESOME idea!!! All told, she collected an amazing $130 for Bay Access (www.bayaccess.org ). All for selling a bunch of old T-shirts. Way to go, Barbara.

DSC00186.JPG
Heh, Higgins, take it of -er-er- we mean PUT IT ON, PUT IT ON!!!!

DSC00187.JPG
Well, actually, Higgins shows off his BASK shirt. Heh, that's the same thing that Barbara is now trying to auction.

DSC00190.JPG
And, the crazy cameraman bids a whopping TWENTY FIVE BUCKS!!!

DSC00191.JPG
Um, heh, I'm the cameraman. Heh, wait a minute, this thing is rigged!! Somebody set me up! I would never voluntarily pay $25 for a T-SHIRT! What kind of rigged auction IS this anyhoo?!?!

DSC00192.JPG
But, Joan wasn't buying my assertions that it was rigged. She comes after me for her $25. Heh, is this a conspiracy or something. (JUST KIDDING! It was to a worthy cause!)

DSC00195.JPG
Scott. The Arteest who designed the BASK Wave shirt. (Next time you look at that design, look closely at the boats. One has a dog on the deck.) But, he was sitting behind me when they told me I'd bid $25. Maybe he raised his hand to frame me? Heh, is this auction one big conspiracy to rip me off?!?!

DSC00196.JPG
Well, at least I get pictures with La Arteest....

DSC00197.JPG
PLUS, he signed the shirt. Now THAT'S a DEAL!!!!

DSC00199.JPG
Higgins shows the last of the Lisa O's "Eat, Sleep, Paddle, BASK" stickers.

DSC00200.JPG
Bobbie stands by with her large cache of show-and-tell first aid stuff.

DSC00201.JPG
Mingling during the break. Dick Ryon basks (so to speak) in the accolads for his latest trip to Morro / Pismo/Avila.

DSC00203.JPG
Jenning says "Howdy".

DSC00206.JPG
Bobbie is still lecturing and reminds us to take a first aid kit. That's something that we often forget (but shouldn't!!!)

DSC00208.JPG
Jesse as Vice President. Well done, Jesse!

DSC00211.JPG
Bobbie fields questions like the pro she is.

DSC00213.JPG
And, Bobbie's final chalkboard. Heh, if you like this, you'll LOVE her class (www.fostercalm.com ).

DSC00214.JPG
Rachel calls for 2004 officer nominations. I won't tell you whom we nominated. Check the BASK Website .

DSC00215.JPG
Maryly has 2 more nominations to add.

DSC00218.JPG
Andrea (on the right) is nominated, by Maryly, as BASK Wine Maven for finding excellent $1.80 (REALLY!) bottles of wine.

DSC00220.JPG
And Deirdre is nominated by Maryly as "BASK Chocolate Maven" for her admirable work at introducing Guittard chocolates to the pallets of BASKers.

DSC00226.JPG
Devorah from Save the Bay gave us a fascinating talk about the Bay. (www.savesfbay.org/ )

DSC00229.JPG
Turns out that in the late 1950's and early 1960s there was a serious plan to fill in most of the Bay and turn it into a river. Imagine that proposal being made in 2004!

DSC00230.JPG
Devorah shows us a map of the Bay. Then she points out a SURPRISE!!!! Do you see it?

DSC00230a.jpg
I'll give you a hint: It wasn't in the background of the last pictures. It's on the map.... See it yet? Squint real hard!

DSC00230b.jpg
Check This Out: Do you see her? The Mermaid in the Bay? Well, that's just one of the MANY things we learned in the February 2004 BASK meeting: Devorah from Save the Bay (www.savesfbay.org ) teaches us how to spot the "Mermaid in the Bay". DSC00233.JPG
Don't forget Save the Bay's "Healthy Beaches" kickoff at Aquatic Park on March 4!

DSC00234.JPG
Maryly gets the last word by nominating Andrea for "BASK Wine Maven" and by nominating Deirdre for "BASK Chocolate Maven". That's all until next month....
