Mussels, Muscles, and Biotoxins. Pre-Sea-Gypsy Weekend.
April 24, 2004
By: Dean McCully

This is ASTONISHING! A couple of months ago, this was booming with 40 foot waves. Now it's dead dry. For now. 2 hours from now, it'll be under water again. Low tide 8:39 AM PDT -0.13 feet. LaRhee leads the charge against the hideous killer mussels.

Don't Forget: Sea Gypsy is coming next weekend, Sunday, May 2, 2004. Check Pictures From the 2003 Sea Gypsy . Oh, and this weekend (Saturday April 24, 2004) was also the last negative tide before the annual mussel quarantine went into effect. So we went out to harvest some mussels from Mavericks. Sadly, toxins were found in several Mussels in Sta Cruz County, so the annual quarintine went into effect on Friday, April 23,2004, 1 DAY before we went mussel plucking. Oh well, it's hard to believe that you can WALK on the boneyard, anyway. Check out these pictures of 40+ foot crashing surf from February 2004: Maverick's Goes Off

Domoic acid poisoning reminder.

Shellfish lovers should avoid eating bivalve (two-shelled) critters, including clams, mussels, scallops and oysters, that are caught by sport-harvesters in Monterey Bay.

The California Department of Health Services issued a warning that these shellfish could be contaminated by domoic acid. Elevated levels of the toxin, which is produced by microscopic algae, were found in the bay.

No cases of human domoic acid poisoning have been reported. Symptoms of poisoning range from vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and dizziness, to more severe cases involving difficulty breathing, disorientation, loss of short-term memory and death.

Commercial shellfish harvesters are state certified, and their catch is subject to testing for the toxin. For information, call (800) 553-4133.
