The Event Report for Sea Trek Regatta and ETC Paddle A Thon 2004

The overcast skies did little to dampen the lively spirits of the 185 paddlers who showed up at Schoonmaker Beach on Saturday, October 16th to paddle in the 23rd Annual Sea Trek Regatta and all new Paddle-a-thon an event benefiting Environmental Traveling Companions¹ (ETC) accessible outdoor adventure programs for people with disabilities and inner-city youth.

As the clock neared 10am, paddlers of all abilities and experience levels ranging from OlympiC paddlers to first time racers, people with disabilities and pure fun-seekers began making their way to the starting line for a group start in Richardson Bay. At the race start signal, 100+ boats separated in a blur of paddle strokes the greener paddlers heading towards Belvedere Point for the 4 mile Richardson Bay course while the more experienced paddlers circumnavigated Angel Island in the 10-mile course and the expert paddlers took on the challenging 13 mile Alcatraz course.

Paddlers returning to the beach were greeted with a delicious BBQ lunch and live music provided by African drumming band, Tandamanzi. They then participated in ETC¹s live Adventurers¹ Auction and awards ceremony honoring the fastest racers in each paddling category. (Full race results can be found at www.seatrekkayak.com)

Special time was taken to acknowledge the 40 paddlers who participated in the Paddle-a-thon a new component to the event this year. These paddlers took on the extra challenge of raising a minimum of $300 in sponsorship pledges for their paddling miles the top fundraiser submitting over $1600 to support ETC¹s scholarship fund! And thanks to the participation of ALL the paddlers, the 75 event volunteers, and generous donors, the event raised over $20,000 for ETC¹s accessible outdoor adventure programs!

While the sun never did peek out from the clouds on Saturday, those of us on the beach hardly noticed we were warmed by the positive feelings of a community coming together for a great day in beautiful Sausalito in support of a worthy cause.

ETC extends our deepest thanks to the generous companies who showed their support through donations to the event:
